The Town of Miami Lakes Hosts Optimist Park Miñoso Sculpture Unveiling

April 26, 2022

Miami Lakes, FL – On Friday April 8th, the Town of Miami Lakes unveiled a new sculpture at Optimist Park, in honor of Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso. The piece, titled ‘MIÑOSO’, symbolizes the significance of the prominent athlete and artist, and his contribution to culture. Accompanied by the family of the artist, it was a heartwarming morning honoring the memory of the athlete and artist. The sculpture was created in memory of Minnie Miñoso, a pillar within the Afro-Latino community, and the sport.

Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso, nicknamed “The Cuban Comet” and “Mr. White Sox”, was a Cuban professional baseball player. He began his baseball career in the Negro leagues in 1946 and became an All-Star third baseman with the New York Cubans. Minnie Miñoso was the first Afro-Latino in the major leagues and the first black player in White Sox history, as a 1951 rookie he was one of the first Latin Americans to play in an MLB All-Star Game. Miñoso was an American League (AL) All-Star for seven seasons and a Gold Glove winner for three seasons when he was in his 30s. As he continued to play, his career continued to flourish. He has become a prominent figure within not only baseball history, but in Afro-Latinx culture as well.

We are happy to have such a fixture of culture by the Optimist Clubhouse for all to see and enjoy on their way to the fields!
