35th Annual Miami Lakes Veterans Parade Marches on Nov. 9; Ludlam Road to Close

Miami Lakes, FL - The Town of Miami Lakes is proud to announce the 35th Annual Miami Lakes Veteran's Day Parade taking place on Sunday, November 9, beginning promptly at 10 am. This year, the parade has a new route and will begin at the corner of Bull Run Road and Ludlam Road (NW 67th Avenue) and then head south on Ludlam Road. The grandstand location will be at Main Street and Ludlam Road.

The Town will close Ludlam Road, between Miami Lakeway North and Miami Lakes Drive from 6:30 am until 1 pm for the parade. The alternate route for through traffic on Ludlam Road will run through Miami Lakeway North for southbound and northbound traffic.

Parade participants include Mayor Wayne Slaton and the Town Council, bands from local high schools, sports clubs, a variety of scouting units, and Miami Lakes’ resident Alex Sanchez who was selected to lead the parade this year as Grand Marshal.

In 2003, Miami native Alejandro “Alex” Sanchez voluntarily enlisted in the United States Navy to fulfill his civic duty of serving his country, serving onboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), a nuclear aircraft carrier in Norfolk, Virginia. Petty Officer Alejandro Sanchez was deployed on September 2006 for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom where he earned several recognitions, such as the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Alejandro Sanchez concluded his time in the Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer. Sanchez continues to serve his community as the current Vice-Chairman of the Town of Miami Lakes Veterans Committee. Alejandro Sanchez is helping returning veterans find his/her way in the transition from military to civilian life by guiding them through the Veterans Affairs Hospital and helping to identify potential job matches. In February 2015, he will be organizing a career fair for veterans in which all veterans are welcome.
Immediately following the parade, a special ceremony will be held at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street, where the Mayor and Town Council will honor the Grand Marshal and all Miami Lakes Veterans, including the presentation of a folded flag.

All Veterans are welcome to participate and should contact Clarisell De Cardenas at decardenasc@miamilakes-fl.gov or by phone at (305) 512-7133 in order to be included. Sponsors are still needed to offset the cost of the parade. Please visit the town's website at www.miamilakes-fl.gov/events for more information.
