Town's Veterans Committee Hosts 2nd Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony

Miami Lakes, FL -  On Saturday, February 8 the Town of Miami Lakes and its Veterans Committee hosted a Flag Retirement Ceremony in front of Town Hall. Members of America Legion Post 144, Boy Scout Troop 566, and Girl Scout Troop 237, participated in the ceremony dedicated to retiring United States flags.

"It was great to see the community come together to participate in this special ceremony. Thank you to the Town's Veterans Committee for organizing this event and sharing this tradition with our residents," said Mayor Wayne Slaton.

The flag retirement began by cutting flags that are torn, faded, and frayed into pieces; separating the red stripes, white stripes and the blue star field. Once a small wood-burning fire formed the remnant pieces of the flag are ready for retirement. Separately the remnant pieces of the flag are burned, each piece symbolizing our nation. The ashes are then collected and buried.
