Town Council Honors Mater Lakes Principal Rene Rovirosa

Miami Lakes, FL -  At the December Council meeting, the Town of Miami Lakes Council recognized town resident Mr. Rene Rovirosa, Principal at Mater Lakes Academy. On Thursday, October 31, Principal Rovirosa saved the life of 15-year-old sophomore, Devon Octave.

"The Town Council and I were honored to pay tribute to this local leader and extend our appreciation for his heroic actions that saved the life of his student," said Mayor Wayne Slaton.

While in wrestling practice, Devon collapsed and went into sudden cardiac arrest. Principal Rovirosa began performing CPR. When fire fighter paramedics arrived at the scene, he had stopped breathing and his pulse was lost. He was clinically dead for seven minutes. Mater Lakes Academy had just trained its staff 6 days before to become CPR certified.

"As a Firefighter/Paramendic and a CPR Instructor, I can tell you how important rapid response is to a cardiac arrest emergency. Principal Rovirosa, along withthe the quick response of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue saved this young man's life," said Councilman Rodriguez. "Principal Rovirosa is a Hero!".
